Small, simple lifestyle changes for a big health effect

Posted in News

Just came across a BBC News health article which cites a study showing that “By not smoking, drinking alcohol in moderation, taking regular physical activity and eating a diet rich in fruit and vegetables, people can improve their chances of living longer.”

This doesn’t sound like earthshattering news, until you look at the graph and see how big a difference these behaviours make to how long people live. Basically, people who have all four of the healthy behaviours are likely to outlive people who have none of them by fourteen years.

Adjusting for body mass index (how much you weigh compared with your height) and social class did not change the results of the study.

This is great news for people wanting to make simple lifestyle changes to improve both their quality and quantity of life. And even better news is that hypnotherapy can help you make those changes – I’m currently working on recordings to support people in exactly these ways, and looking at this study makes me think that I could do a “healthy lifestyle” package: smokefree, enjoying alcohol in moderation, exercise, and healthy eating. Watch this space.

(EDIT: It’s finished now, and you can get a free sample track from my podcast.)

The Public Library of Science study is available in full on the web.
