A follow-up to yesterday’s post about small lifestyle changes for a big health effect, which mentioned moderate alcohol consumption as a positive for increasing lifespan. The BBC reports that, indeed, a little alcohol (1-14 units a week, that is, one beer a week up to about one glass of wine a day) can have a positive effect on heart health. The study also looked at exercise, and concluded that both factors (moderate alcohol consumption and being physically active) were important in reducing the risk of heart disease, and either one by itself would do so (both, obviously, being the ideal).
The original study was published in the European Heart Journal.
A reminder that moderation can sometimes be better than totally abstaining.
