Hypnosis for childbirth – anaesthetist talks it up

April 21st, 2009 · View Comments

These three things I like to see:

1. Positive mentions of hypnotherapy anywhere.

2. Positive mentions of hypnotherapy in major news media.

3. Positive mentions of hypnotherapy in major news media quoting medical doctors.

Assuming you consider the New Zealand Herald major news media, and ignoring the fact that this piece, which I just came across thanks to a Google blog search, is almost 4 years old, this is what we have right here.

Dr Marion Andrew, senior consultant anaesthetist at the Women and Children’s Hospital in Adelaide, gave a paper to the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists in 2005 on the benefits of hypnosis in preparation for childbirth.

Now, I hasten to mention that I haven’t had a client approach me yet for antenatal hypnosis. If I did, I would certainly consult with, and probably refer them to, my mentor Roger Saxelby, who is a qualified Hypnobirthing instructor. But here’s the point I’m making: There’s growing recognition within the medical profession of the usefulness of hypnosis in the relief of pain, and indeed in general. I’ve had a doctor come to me, a paediatrician, who had heard about the benefits of hypnosis at a professional conference. The word is out there – we just want to encourage it further.

I’ve applied to speak at the NZ Hypnotherapy Federation’s conference in September on hypnosis in the relief of pain, not only how we can do it but how we can promote it. We don’t have nearly such an uphill job as we would have just a few years ago.
