How you can change your life

If you’re ready for personal change, especially for healthy, positive lifestyle changes, increased motivation, confidence, emotional management and stress management, or overcoming stress-related physical symptoms, a few sessions with me can move you quickly past your mental blocks and into a fresh, new life.

We’ll work particularly on resolving the inner conflicts that keep you doing things you hate or stop you doing things you love, so that you can feel and act like a whole, integrated person.

Issues I have helped people with include:

  • stopping smoking
  • weight reduction/weight control
  • motivation for exercise and nutrition/diet improvement
  • sports performance
  • confidence
  • phobias and fears
  • dealing with past emotional traumas
  • management of current emotions
  • stress management and learning to relax
  • “nervous habits” like nailbiting
  • physical symptoms which are made worse by stress (such as skin conditions/dermatitis, allergies and irritable bowel/stomach symptoms)
  • pain management
  • preparation for and recovery from surgery and other medical procedures, including management of pain and other side effects.

A session usually lasts an hour. Most issues need between three and six sessions for best results, occasionally more for physical issues.

I give you a CD of the work we have done at the end of the first session, and I find that clients who listen to the CD consistently have better outcomes than those who don’t.

Session Costs and Value

The cost per session is $100, payable at the end of the session. If after the first half hour we agree not to proceed further, there is no charge.

The value per session is partly up to you, of course. I have no magic wand, but I see person after person come to me and fulfill their dreams of a healthier or otherwise better life by using the techniques I teach.

Think about the amount that you spend on smoking, or junk food. Think about the quality of life you have versus what you could have. Think about the financial and emotional and lifestyle cost of potential future ill health, and reflect on what that’s worth to you. Or think about what you could achieve if you were more confident, motivated and focussed.

Payment Methods

Please bring cash or a cheque to your session. You can also prepay by Internet banking, PayPal, or credit card over PayPal (with or without a PayPal account) – ask for details when booking.

Session Format

We start by discussing the issue that brings you to me, which may be a habit you want to get rid of (or begin), a behaviour or attitude you want to change, a fear or phobia you want to overcome, or a range of physical issues such as allergies, asthma, chronic pain or irritable bowel syndrome (see What Hypnotherapy Is Good For, on this site). Please consult your doctor first if  you are coming for a physical issue.

Since I am a health coach as well as a hypnotherapist, for many issues you will get practical lifestyle advice and behavioural techniques alongside the hypnotherapy, and useful resources to take away with you.

At the first session, we talk about your previous experience of hypnotherapy (if any) and what hypnotherapy is. (I discuss the 10 most common myths about hypnosis elsewhere on this site.)

I will then guide you into hypnosis, which is a pleasant, relaxed state in which your subconscious mind is more accessible and your focussed creative imagination can bring about remarkable changes in your life. (See How Hypnotherapy Works for more details.)

I usually start by encouraging your subconscious mind to resolve any internal conflicts it might feel about changing thoughts, feelings or behaviour, in favour of your desired outcome. This part of the session is recorded and burned to a CD on the spot for you to take with you, so that you can reinforce the suggestions by listening to them repeatedly.

Group Work

If you have a common issue, such as smoking, eating or a phobia, and know between 3 and 6 other people with similar issues, I am happy to run a group session in your home (or workplace). As the host and organizer of the group, you get the session free of charge, and I offer a discount over my usual one-on-one rates to your guests. Contact me for further details.

I also work with couples (or friends) who have similar issues in my consulting room. There is some price reduction over what you would pay individually.

Qualifications and Background

Registered Hypnotherapist logoI am a Registered Hypnotherapist with the NZ Hypnotherapists Registration Board and a full Professional Member of the New Zealand Association of Professional Hypnotherapists, entry to which is by examination.

As well as the Diploma of Advanced Hypnotherapy from the highly respected Alpha Hypnosis Training school, I hold a Master of Arts in English with first class honours from Auckland University, a Certificate in Celebrant Studies (specializing in Rituals for Transition through Crisis) from Auckland University of Technology, and a Certificate in Health Science from Massey University.

I have completed the National Heart Foundation’s Smoking Cessation Practitioner course and I am registered as a Quit Card Provider, which means that I can give you vouchers for subsidized nicotine replacement therapy (patches, gum or lozenges) to help you stop smoking if that applies. I use a standardized assessment form to determine if this is likely to be appropriate for your situation.

I’ve previously worked as a book editor, technical writer, corporate trainer and consultant. A lot of the key skills for those professions transfer to hypnotherapy – communication, discovering the client’s current situation, desired situation and resources, planning out a path to get from here to there.

Personally, I’m a keen kayaker, an occasional fiction writer, and am working on reaching the US military fitness standard for my age.
